Terrible Farming, or the Whole Gospel (Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23)

Jesus calls wealth deceitful because it doesn't merely distort what we want; it also distorts what we need. It quietly trains an entire culture to decide whose life matters, whose safety’s worth funding, and whose suffering can be written off as unfortunate in a world where some people count, while others don't.
The lie about wealth tells us that security means getting safely inside the wall, while encouraging us not to think too hard about what happens to the people who get left outside it.
That's the gospel of wealth. It lies to us and tells us that we can survive the thorns by building a higher fence.
But the good news of God's reign says something altogether different. In this new world God’s preparing, the message is to pull up another chair. Set another place at the table, and make sure everybody gets something to eat.
